Canada’s economy recovers 94,000 jobs in July

In July 2021, Canada’s economy almost resembled the pre-pandemic levels. This was found through the Labor Force Survey conducted by Statistics Canada. The survey determined the number of recent immigrants who came to work in Canada.

The survey observed the labor market conditions between July 11, 2021, and July 17, 2021. In this duration, there was a significant reduction in public health restrictions in Canada. This was owing to low counts of new cases and a high rate of vaccination against the COVID-19.

In July 2021, Canada created 94,000 jobs and brought the rate of immigrants who came to work in Canada to 1.3% under the levels in February 2020. Most of the gains came in full-time work, particularly in the service industries of the private sector.

There was a fall in unemployment too. Unemployment fell to 7.5%. This rate matched the rate in March.

Positive development in the employment rate for newbie immigrants

Who are the “very recent” or “newbie” immigrants?

As per Statistics Canada, immigrants who landed in Canada within the past 5 years are considered as “very recent” or “newbie” immigrants. Though the number of newbies has declined since March 2020 following the border closure, the rate of such immigrants who work in Canada has shot up during the whole time the pandemic was there in Canada.

But this trend may not be understood as they getting employed more frequently than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In July 2021, the rate of employment for very recent immigrants came up at 69.1%. This was up 1% from June 2021.

Among immigrants residing in Canada for over 5 years, the rate of employment in July 2021 was 58.1%. This was lesser in comparison to the rate in June 2021.

Also, the number of newbie immigrants who joined the labor force to work in Canada rose to 751,000 in 2019 from over 612,000 in 2016. Such a growth met with stagnation in 2020. This was the result of COVID-induced travel restrictions, and other pandemic-related steps taken. Read More
